The Tour will kick off in March in Malaysia and encompass 6 qualifying bowling tournaments in ciries throughout Asia and will culminate in the Grand Slam Finals in January 1999 in Taipei.

The Asian Bowling Tour is sanctioned by FIQ-WTBA Asian Zone, Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress, Philippine Bowling Congress, Hong Kong Tenpin Bowling Congress, Singapore Tenpin Bowling Congress, Thailand Tenpin Bowling Association and Chinese Taipei Bowling Association and is promoted by Sports Corporation Limited.

The Asian Bowling Tour is comprised of five Masters Cup events, including Malaysia (15-16 March); Philippines (14-15 June); Hong Kong (13-14 July) and Singapore (17-18 August); Thailand Masters Cup (7-8 September) and Grand Slam Finals (16-17 January 1999) in Taipei, Taiwan.

The top 14 Asian men and women bowlers from each Open Men and Ladies Masters event of the selected International Open will qualify for the Masters Cup. At the end of the season, the top 16 men and women bowlers from the Tour Ranking List will qualify for the Grand Slam Finals in Taipei.

Mrs. Vivien Fung, President of the FIQ-WTBA Asian Zone, said, "All member federations in the Asian Zone are very excited over this prestigious event as we have been thinking of organizing such an event for the past two years. We really appreciate AMF and Sports Corporation for their support and effort to promote the sport of bowling in Asia. The Tour certainly creates a grand showcase, enabling people to realize how competitive our sport is and definitely assist us in pursuing our 'Olympic Quest'."

The Tour also offers AMF a fantastic opportunity to help spread the fun and excitement of bowling in one of our company's most important markets." The company is the world leader in the manufacturing and marketing of bowling products and the world's largest owner and operator of bowling centres with nearly 500 centres in eleven countries throughout the world.

Managing Director of Sports Corporation, Chris McDonald added, "With sudden death matches, big prize money and live prime time coverage on ESPN, the Asian Bowling Tour is certain to bring bowling to a new level in Asia. Our thanks to Vivien Fung and the FIQ-WTBA Asian Zone for their tremendous cooperation and support as it has made this Tour possible. I would alo like to thank the AMF for their commitment to the Tour and to bowling within Asia."

Chinese Taipei Women and Malaysian Men Storm to the Semi Finals

The 1st Leg of the Asian Bowling Tour got off to an exciting start today, with the Chinese Taipei women dominating the lanes and the Philippines' Paeng Nepomuceno and three Malaysians men advancing handily.

In the women's division, Hong Kong's Karen Lorenzana and Singapore's Jesmine Ho both fell in the first round, leaving Malaysia and Taipei to battle in the quarter finals.

Local favourite Shalin Zulkifli fell to Taipei's Chien Nu Chu in a one-point match that saw a final pin tumble after a tense few moments of swaying that had the home crowd on the edge. With a by through the first round, Shalin was tipped to advance to the semis, but after opening strong, she suffered a five frame drought of strikes. Despite coming on hard at the end with three strikes in the 10th frame, Shalin's 192 couldn't quite put her past Taipei's Chien Nu Chu at 193.

On the next two lanes, the local crowd was treated to a strong victory by Malaysian Sharon Low who beat teamate Karen Lian 189-132. Earlier in the evening meanwhile, four teamates from Chinese Taipei battled for a coveted spot in the semis. Su Fen Tseng bowled an impressive 268 ousting her teamate Yu Ling Wang who bowled a 214. Yi Fan Lin polished off the tenth frame with three strikes and pushed out teamate Ting Yu Lin 236-203.

In the men's division, Paeng held his game steady and powered out with a spare in the ninth and three strikes in the tenth, beating Singapore's David Ang 204-169.

Ng Yew Hup, the recently crowned champion of the 21st Malaysian International Open, knocked out Taipei's Chen Sheng Huang 202-188. The day's bowling finished with a second Malaysian eliminating another of Chinese Taipei's men bowlers. Malaysia's popular Kamarul Azwan defeated Taipei's Cheng Meng Yang 221-190 to the delight of the home crowd.

Day 2 will feature Yi Fan Lin going head to head with Su Fe Tseng and Sharon Low meeting Chien Nu Chu in the final round of the women's division. In the men's division meanwhile, Paeng Nepomuceno will meet Kamarul Azwan, while Malaysia's Ben Heng will bowl against teamate Ng Yew Hup in the semi finals.

The Malaysian Masters Cup is the opening leg of the inaugural Asian Bowling Tour. The Tour is Asia's first-ever regional bowling circuit which allows local bowlers to accumulate ranking points and battle for a year-end title. Live television coverage on ESPN, prize money totalling over US$200,000 and an exciting single elimination format of play are also features of the Asian Bowling Tour.

The Tour will make five more stops around Asia this year before finishing up with the Grand Slam Finals in Taipei in January 1999.

Women go to Tie-breaker and Philippine Hero is crowned Champion in the Finals of Malaysia Masters Cup

The Asian Bowling Tour’s opening leg came to an exciting close today, with the Philippines’ Paeng Nepomuceno and Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yi Fan taking top honours in the inaugural event.

In the womens’ semi finals Chu Hsien Nu of Taipei fell to Sharon Low 168 – 163 in a close game that saw Low, twice Malaysia’s sportswoman of the year advance to the finals. Next up two Chinese Taipei teammates bowled a one pin match as a final wavering pin wouldn’t fall for Tseng Su Fen and she allowed Lin Yi Fan to advance to the finals 223 – 222.

In the men’s semi-finals, the home crowd was treated to three local heroes and regional favorite Paeng Nepomuceno battling for a spot in the finals. Nerves were high and scores were low as Malaysia’s Ng Yiew Hup fell to teammate Ben Heng 209 – 182. Next up Malaysia’s Kamarul Azwan bowled a disappointing 133 to Philippines’ Paeng Nepomuceno’s 169 and the finals were set with a Malaysian man and women bowling for the two top spots.

In the breathtaking Sharon Low kept up a steady flow of spares to the seventh frame to keep Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yi Fan at bay until Fan powered in three strikes and three spares and Low faltered. Lin bowled out with 175 and Low went into the tenth with 165. The crowd was on edge as Low dropped eight and left a corner pair standing for a chance at a tiebreaker. She capitalized and the two bowlers went into a rare ninth and tenth frame tiebreaker. Lin went on to win however, as Low was only able to drop nine pins in the ninth and bowled out with an 18 to Lin’s 36.

In the men’s final, local favourite Ben Heng had an uphill battle bowling against the vast experience of Paeng Nepomuceno, but he came on strong with an opening strike/spare combo and finished with an overall 201. It wasn’t enough to catch Paeng’s 214 however, and the Philippine sports hero and four-time AMF World Cup champion added another title to his impressive career.

Paeng has said he will certainly be on hand for the next leg of the Asian Bowling Tour in Nanjing, China on May 2 and 3, 1998. His efforts at the Malaysian Masters give him USD5, 000 to add to his earnings and 90 points towards the tour title.

The Asian Bowling Tour is a first-ever event and is presented by AMF Bowling Products and broadcast live on ESPN to over 23 million homes around Asia.
