Step Ladder Grand Finals
23rd November 1997

It was a classic case of being so near, yet so far. Bowling prodigy Shalin Zulkifli got her second shot at the AMF Bowling World Cup title but still let the title slip away.

She came in third, on a day when almost everyone involved felt that she could make up for her disappointment of finishing runner-up to Australian Cara Honeychurch last year. In the step-ladder grand final against South Korean Lee Ji-Soon, Shalin only managed a 190 while Ji-Soon shot 203. Ji-Soon went on to meet Tseng Su-Feng in the second match but lost to the Taiwanese 225-236.

All smiles as Shalin Zulkifli and Kenny Ang
display their trophies after returning from
Cairo with their exceptional performances
at the 33rd AMF Bowling World Cup.
A pair of AMF lanes were specially built in
the open air near the great Pyramids of Egypt
setting the atmosphere for the Step-Ladder Grand
Finals of the 33rd AMF Bowling World Cup near Cairo.

Kenny Ang finished fourth. Christian Nokel of Germany beat Peng Yung-Nein of Taiwan 210-200 to finish as champion. Nokel had earlier beaten Gery Verbuggen of Belgium 212-178.

The grand finals was held at an open air venue for the first time in the history of tenpin bowling. The two AMF competition lanes were constructed with the Sphinx as a backdrop behind the machines and a giant pyramid on both sides.

Shalin, however, can take consolation for being awarded the United Emirate's (UAE) Most Valuable Player Award for her sportmanship, determination and intensity.
