Sarah Yap wins bronze
Sarah Yap finished fourth in the women's singles bowling competition at the P.S. Bowling Centre yesterday but she was declared the bronze medalist.
The South Koreans went into overdrive to take the top three spots after the six-game playoffs. But the Asian Games rules states that only two bowlers from one country can win medals in any one event.
It took the technical committee almost two hours to verify the rule. But the Koreans have protested and the medal presentation ceremony has been postponed to today.
Sarah had a total of 1,281 pinfalls - eight pins fewer than Asian Championships Masters gold medalist Cha Mi-jung. Lee Yi-yeon and Lee Mi-young took the top two spots with scores of 1,330 and 1,327 respectively.
The competition's technical delegate, Don Atkinson of Australia confirmed that the Asian Games rules did not allow a country to be awarded more than two medals in any event.
"Although the final placements will show that the top three positions went to the Koreans, the bronze will be awarded to Sarah," said Atkinson.
The Koreans want to see the rule in writing and we will provide them with it tomorrow." The event was similar to the 1993 SEA Games in Singapore when Malaysia finished in the top three positions but Shirley Chow had to surrender the bronze to Singapore's Alice Tay.
Sarah, who bowled in the morning session, could have won the bronze outright if she had spared the last two frames in game six. She started the game with six strikes and the two open frames left her with a total of 222 total.
Mi-jung, who bowled later in the afternoon, needed two strikes in the last two frames of her game to take third spot and she delivered.
"She (Mi-jung) did well and deserved the medal. I feel sorry for her," said Sarah. She said that the bronze wouls spur her on to give better results in the coming events. She will team up with Low Poh Lian for the doubles today. Poh Lian finished fifth with a 1,278 total while the rest of the Malaysian women struggled with the lane condition.
Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Lai Kin Ngoh was 16th with a total of 1,198 while Karen Lian knocked down 1,177 pins for 20th place.
Further down were Sharon Low - in 33rd spot with a 1,118 total. The biggest disappointment was World Cup bronze medalist Shalin Zulkifli, who was placed 35th with a poor 1,101.
Kenny finishes poor 23rd
Just over two months ago, veteran Kenny Ang was revelling in the glory of the KL Games.
His iron will and determination saw him winning the singles bowling gold medal. But yesterday, Kenny could not even finish among the top 10 in the men's singles competiton at the P.S. Bowling Centre in Bangkapi.
Kenny averaged 204 with a six-game total of 1,224, but that effort was worth only 23rd placing. Kenny's KL Games partner Ben Heng fared even worse. He knocked down a poor 1,128 to finish 64th. Malaysia's best performer in the competition was Vincent Low, who finished 12th with a 1,295 total.
Chuen Lian, playing his first competiton as a senior was 20th with 1,237 total. Daniel Lim was 27th with 1,213 while Alex Liew totalled 1,154 to finish 51st.
National Coach Sid Allen was happy with the results despite missing out on the medals. "I am satisfied with the results. I am especially happy with the form of our youngsters - Chuen Lian and Vincent," said Sid.
He added that both bowlers were likely to feature in the next World Championships and they gave a good account of themselves. "Chuen Lian is moving up the ranks just as soomthly as Shalin Zulkifli did. He is going to be something special," said Allen. He added that lefties in the team did not do well as the conditions did not favour them. "But we will fare better in the next few events. We have always done well in the doubles and trios," said Allen.
In today's doubles, Vincent will partner Alex while Daniel will team up with Ben. Kenny and Chuen Lian will be the best bet for a medal.

Bowlers get rolled over
Malaysian bowlers continued to fire blanks at the P.S. Bowling Centre in Bangkapi yesterday. The doubles competition got off with the controversy of the bronze medal awarded to Sarah Yap in the women's singles still unresolved.

And Sarah looked clearly upset by the uncertainty as she struggled to get her game going in her doubles partnership with Low Poh Lian. In fact, all the Malaysian pairs were inconsistent in their performance and coach Sid Allen said the bowlers found difficulty focusing on their tasks.
"They are still unable to adjust to the lane conditions and coupled with the various problems we have been encountering, things didn't go well," said Allen. He added that controversy surrounding Sarah's bronze medal has also affected the team to a certain extent.
With a low game of 139 and an average Of only 174.67, Sarah and Poh Lian finished a distant 18th with a 2,258 total. Sarah knocked down 1,048 pinfalls and Poh Lian downed 1,210. Shalin Zulkifli and Lai Kin Ngoh led the first frame with a 472 total but Kin Ngoh's game crumbled after that. The pair rolled down 2,343 pins to finish 13th. Sharon Low and Karen Lian rolled a total of 2,212 to finish 20th out of 24 teams.
The men also fared badly, failing to get among the top five. Ben Heng and Daniel Lim started off aggressively in the afternoon sessions. They were chasing the target of 2,652 set by Thailand's Prasert Panturat and J.Kritchawat, who were the top finishers from the morning session. But they stumbled out of contention, knocking down only 2,381 to finish 20th overall.
A poor last two frames from Vincent Low saw his partnership with Alex Liew also crashing out. The pair's combined total of 2,370 saw them finishing seventh in the morning session and 22nd overall.
Commonwealth Games gold medallist Kenny Ang was also a disapppointment. While partner Lai Chuen Lian was bowling a 200.17 average, Kenny could only manage a 198. The partnership rolled down 2,391 pins to finish 18th.

Poh Lian brings some cheer to Allen's bowling squad
Low Poh Lian's qualification for the women's Masters competition was the only silver lining for Malaysia at the P.S. Bowling Centre in Bangkapi yesterday. All the four trios combinations could not finish among the top five after the second block of three games.
Low Poh Lian, Sarah Yap and Shalin Zulkifli were the best Malaysian finishers in sixth position with 3,525 pinfalls, 251 pins behind gold medallists Taiwan. The second Malaysian squad of Karen Lian, Sharon Low and Lai Kin Ngoh finished a distant 12th with a 3,340 total.
Lai Chuen Lian, Kenny Ang and Alex Liew could only manage 14th spot after managing 3,509 pinfalls. As for the trio of Ben Heng, Daniel Lim and Vincent Low, they were placed 20th with a 3,410 total.
Poh Lian had qualified in 11th spot for the Masters. She will be up against four Koreans, six Taiwanese, two Singaporeans and one each from Thailand, Japan and the Philippines. Meanwhile Sarah Yap, who just missed out on a Masters place after finishing 18th in the list, finally received the bronze medal for the women's singles yesterday after the Olympic Council Of Asia (OCA) threw out South Korea's protest.
Technical delegate Don Atkinson of Australia said on Friday that the OCA had verified the rule that no country could win more than two medals in any one event in bowling. The South Korean women filled all the top three spots in the singles competition. The loser in the situation is Cha Mi-Jung, who finished third. The gold medalists was Lee Ji-Yean and the silver went to Lee Mi-Young.

Malaysian failed to spark
The women came close to winning a medal in the Team of Five event. If not for the open frame by Shalin Zulkifli in the final game, Malaysia could have bagged the bronze medal. In the end, the Malaysians were pipped by 22 pins to the bronze by Japan. The Japanese totalled 5,631 pinfalls to Malaysia's 5,591. A poor 173 game in the second block also cost Shalin a place in the Masters.
National coach Sid Allen said that the women did well to come back strongly in the fives.
"We were in the fight right until the last game. They overcame a 300 over deficit after the first block to be in contention for a medal," said Allen. He added that Poh Lian would have no chance to finish among the medal winners in the Masters.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Men's quintet failed to spark, finishing 10th after knocking down 5,799 pinfalls.
Low Poh Lian was the only one to qualify for the Masters.

Poh Lian too far behind for a medal
Low Poh Lian will only be making up the numbers when the second block of the women's Masters competition is played today. Poh Lian, the sole Malaysian in the competition, finished in 15th after the first block of eight games yesterday.
She knocked down 1,524 pins and is 246 pin behind leader Lee Ji-Yean of South Korea. It is virtually impossible for her to make the cut for the step-ladder finals. Only the top four bowler qualify for the step-ladder finals and Poh Lian is 210 pins behind fourth-placed Huang Chiung-Yao of Taiwan. Pho Lian recorded an aevrage of 190.5 yesterday and at that rate, she will probably fall further behind the leaders. The top five in the competition hold an average of more than 213 pinfalls.
Leading the men's first block is Hui Cheung-Kwok of Hong Kong with 1,824. Singles Gold medalist, Wu Fu-Lung of Taiwan is second, 41 pins behind and third is teammate, Lin Han-Chen with a score of 1,767 pinfalls.
In the women's division, Singles Gold medalist, Lee Ji-Yean of South Korea is leading the pack with 1,770 pins, followed closely by Chou Miao-Lin if Taiwan with 1,755. Just one behind Maio-Lin is Singapore's Jesmine Ho.

Hong Kong bowler upset Taiwan favorites
Hui Cheung-Kwok of Hong Kong created an upset when he beat favorite and Singles Gold medalist, Wu Fu-Lung 459-386 pins over two games in the Men's step-ladder Grand finals on the last day of the tenpin bowling competition to take the Gold medal. Earlier, Fu-Lung took over the lead from Cheung-Kwok after the second block of eight games in the semi-finals when scored a total of 3,577 pinfalls. Cheung-Kwok who led Fu-Lung 41 pins before the second block, scored a total of 3,478 pinfalls over the 16 games. The Bronze went to Lin Han-Chen of Chinese Taipei who lost to Cheung-Kwok in the first match of the step-ladder grand finals 166-212.
In the Women division, Jesmine Ho of Singapore came closed to winning the Gold medal but was unlucky when she lost to Chou Miao-Lin of Taiwan in the 2-game step-ladder Grand finals, 336-382 and was contented with the Silver medal. Earlier, Jesmine beat Huang Chiung-Yao of Taiwan 183-180.
Taiwan nearly made a clean sweep of the Men and the Women Masters Gold.
