SHALIN STRIKE GOLD!
August 11: 1997 National Sportwoman of the Year and newly crowned Asian Bowler of the Year, Shalin Zulkifli became the first Malaysian bowler to win a Gold in the FIQ World Youth Championship at the Dae Dong World Bowl in Inchon Metro City, Korea this evening.
Shalin, who was expected to do well with Sid Allen's peaking program before leaving for Korea, lived up to the expectation when she shot a superb 1,365 to leave her nearest rival Kim Yeau Jin of Korea by 99 pins. The score is a new record in the FIQ World Youth Championship which smashed the old resord of 1,289 set by Sera Vergas of Columbia in 1996.
The Gold is the first ever won by a Malaysian since the FIQ World Youth Championship which started in 1990. The only other bowler who came close to winning a Gold was Sarah Yap in the 4th FIQ World Championship in Hong Kong 2 years ago when she won the Silver in the Singles.

The other team members, Low Poh Lian and Lai Kin Ngoh also did well to stay among the Masters Finals qualifiers.
Kamarul Azwan almost won another medal for Malaysia in the Boy's Singles when he was leading the field after four games. But pressure got onto him and he finished the last two games with 156 and 188 to slip to 10th position. However, he is in a good position for the All Events. According to Jim Porter, the Assistant National Coach, both Daniel Lim and Alex Liew also did well and are in the running for a place in the Masters Finals.

SHALIN PULLS OUT FROM MASTERS FINALS!
August 15: The Malaysia Bowling queen, after her superb performances in winning the Singles and All-Events Gold at the 5th FIQ World Youth Championship in Inchon Metro City, Korea, has to pull out of the Masters Finals due to an old injury of her thumb. The thumb was very badly blistered and National Chief coach, Sid Allen and his assistant, Jim Porter decided to pull her out from the 2nd Block of the Masters Finals tomorrow.
Shalin has been suffering from the same injury after the Pre-Commonwealth Games late June and was asked to stop training in early July for a week. "We cannot allow her to continue as it may affect her preparation for the Commonwealth Games next month. She will now rest for at least a week before she resume training", said Sid Allen at the Dae Dong World Bowl after the final game of the 1st Block today.
With Shalin's pull out, her teammate Low Poh Lian put Malaysia's hope alive in the Girl's Masters. Poh Lian started shakily this afternoon with a 181, followed by 211. But three poor games of 158, 168 and 160 pushed her position much lower in the 16 finalists although she recorded 211, 211 and 226 in her other games. She is now lying 14th with a score of 1,546 averaging 193.25. She need to bowl exceptionally well tomorrow to have a chance for the step-ladder finals.
Leading after 8 games in the Girl's Masters is 1996 champion Wang Yu-Lin of Chinese Taipei with 1,755. Second is Tan Bee Leng of Singapore with 1,738 followed by USA's Kelly Kulick with 1,677.
In the Boy's division, Alex Liew did well and to tie with USA's Noel Ogata in 5th position with 1,688. Alex bowled consistenly with 175, 225, 200, 193, 204, 216, 182 and 213 and won six out of his eight matches. His teammate, Kamarul Azwan is lying 11th with 1,623.
Leading after 8 games in the Boy's Masters is All-Events winner Petteri Salonen of Finland with 1,772. Qatar's Murabark Alim is second with 1,746 followed by American Jeremy Sonnenfield in third with 1,736.
There will be another 8 games tomorrow where the top three bowlers will qualify for the Step-Ladder Finals.

ALEX ROLLS DOWN MALAYSIA'S THIRD GOLD
August 16: Malaysia rolled to its third Gold medal when Alex Liew won the Masters event at the 5th FIQ World Youth Championship at Dae Dong World Bowl in Inchon Metro City, Korea.
Alex, the youngest bowler in the team, won the Melbourne Cup in Australia last year, was burning the lanes when he started the 2nd Block this afternoon.
He began his fifth place, 104 pins behind leader Petteri Salonen of Finland. He wasted no time in making up the deficit and won the first four games with scores of 222, 248, 219 and 257. He then relaxed a little with score of 187 and 188 but ended strongly with score of 234 and 208 to top the field. His total of 3,481 was just 14 pins better than second placed Murabark Alim of Qatar. Petteri was third with 3,462 pins.

In the Step-Ladder final, Alex continued his superb form to total 440 pins (223 and 217) to win the gold. Another Malaysia - Kamarul Azwan - finished 10th.
"We were confident Alex would perform well after yesterday's fifth placing. This is the biggest win for the Malaysian boys in the sport," said chief coach Sid Allen. "He is the first malaysian male to win the title and we are proud of him."
In the Girl's final, Chinese Taipei's Wang Yu-Lin success fully defended her title when she beat overall leader Kelly Kulick of the US. Yu-Lin finished with 393 pins against Kulick's 357.
Malaysia ended the meet with three golds and two bronze medals.
