

The Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) announced today that there will be a pool of world-class bowlers participating in this year’s 22nd Land & General-MAS Malaysian International Open Bowling Championship 1999 from the 9th to the 20th March, 1999.
"The championship is being held at the Sunway Pyramid Bowl, which was the venue for last year’s 16th Commonwealth Games Tenpin Bowling event.
Current World Cup champions, C.M. Yang of Taiwan, Maxine Nable of Australia and Silver medalist of the Commonwealth Games, Richard Hood of England have confirmed their participation. Our national bowlers, Kenny Ang, the Commonwealth Games Singles and Doubles Gold medalist, 1st Runner-up in the Asian Bowling Tour Grand Slam Finals and Commonwealth Games Doubles Gold medalist Ben Heng and Lai Kin Ngoh, Commonwealth Games Singles Silver medalist. Newly crowned Asian Bowling Tour 1998 Grand Slam Finals champion, Sarah Yap will hope to maintain her form to win the 1st leg here in Malaysia.
The official opening ceremony was held on the 16th March, 1999 at 7.45 pm at Sunway Pyramid Bowl, Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya. The ceremony was offciated by YBhg. Tan Sri Azmi Wan Hamzah, Chairman of Land & General Berhad and attended by many dignitaries and invited guests. Immediately after the opening ceremony, a Special Mix Doubles event was held.

The Asian Bowling Tour 1999 first leg, the Malaysia Masters Cup will be held on the 21st - 22nd March, 1999.
The top 14 Asian men and women bowlers from each Open Men and Ladies Masters event of the 22nd L&G-MAS Malaysian Open will qualify for the Masters Cup. Each participant will gain Tour Ranking points according to their positions.

Going into the second day of the championship, the lanes at Pyramid are being fired up even before the foreign bowlers arrive.
Ooi Lai Beng, a member of the Gemilang 2001 who shot a perfect game in last year's Australian International Youth Championship, put up a superb performance totaling 1,467 pinfalls to lead the Men's Open masters qualifying table. Bowling his second attempt, Lai Beng who is still eligible to bowl in the youth, had lines of 226, 241, 276, 236 243 and 245.
Ooi's teamate, Lai Chuen Lian also qualified with 1,360 pinfalls and is lying in 2nd place. Commonwealth double gold medalist and National Champion, Kenny Ang is in 3rd place with 1,356 followed by Gerald Samuel with 1,339 in 4th. Samuel is determined to have a good showing to gain confidence for his recall into the national squad.
A rising star from Selangor - Ang Kean Joo who was called into the national youth squad recently, outshined the more experienced and senior bowlers to score 1,444 in the Milo Youth Boy's Open division. Ang had lines of 224, 243, 235, 267, 240 and 235 for an impressive average of 240.
Newly crowned National Champion who captured the innaugural Asian Bowling Tour Grand Slam's title in January, Sarah Yap continued her fine form to lead the women's Open masters qualifying table with 1,326. She started with a 257 in her first game and continued with consistent scores of 224, 224, 216, 202 and 203. Sharon Low also qualified with a score of 1,261 and is lying 2nd in the table while Karen Lian is 10 pins behind in 3rd. Other national bowlers will commence their qualifying tomorrow.Going into the fourth day of the championship, the lanes at Pyramid saw ex-national bowlers qualifying in the men's Open Masters.
Alan Chia of Kuala Lumpur and winner of two Gold medals in the Malaysian Interstate championship qualified with 1,387 pinfalls and is lying second in the table joined by F.J. Lim, also from Kuala Lumpur with a score of 1,331 pinfalls in 6th place. Edwin Yeoh of Selangor, who finished 3rd in the Malaysian National championship two months ago improved on his earlier score with 1,330 pinfalls in 7th place. Another ex-national, Azidi Ameran of Selangor also scored 1,317 and is lying 8th in the table.
National bowler, Mustafa Yassin also improved his earlier score with 1,310 pinfalls in 10th place. Derek Teo of Kuala Lumpur and recently promoted to the national youth squad after an impressive showing at the Interstate championship scored 1,277 pinfalls. But this socre may not be enough for him to make the finals.
Meanwhile, Sarah Yap still leads the Women's master qualifying table with her 1,326 pinfalls followed by Sharon low with 1,261 and Karen Lian 1,251. They are lying 2nd and 3rd respectively. Shalin Zulkifli in her second attempt scored 1,238 pinfalls and is in 4th position. K.N. Lai also improved her score with 1,227 in her second attempt and is in 5th place. She is joined by Low Poh Lian with 1,218 in 6th.
World Cup champion, Maxine Nable of Australia will be arriving on the 15th March and she will be keen to try her qualifying on her favourite lanes. She won a gold in the Doubles and a Silver in the Singles during the 16th Commonwealth Games at the same centre. Richard Hood of England, who shot a perfect game during the KL98 will also be arriving on the 15th March for this championship.
World Cup champion, C.M. Yang of C. Taipei will be here on the 14th March after he completes the ongoing 11th Super Classic 1999 at Cathay Bowl, Singapore. He is currently lying 8th after two days of competition.
Cheng Chao-Sheng of Taiwan scored an impressive 1,442 to take the lead in the Men's Open Masters overseas pool qualifying table followed by Cheng Chao-Yu with 1,366. Third is AMF World Cup champion, C.M. Yang of Chinese Taipei with 1,364 pinfalls going into the 5th and 6th day of the championship. Asian Bowling Tour '98 top seed, Jack Wong of Singapore also qualified on his second attempt with 1,345 and is in 5th place in the table.
There is not much change in the local pool except Azizan Hanif from Penang who scored 1,351 and is in 5th place in the local pool table.
Richard Hood of England, who shot a perfect game in the 16th Commonwealth Games last year, arrived today and will be starting his qualifying rounds. Paolo Valdez of the Philippines is arrving today and will probably start his qualifying tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the Chinese Taipei women bowlers are also dominating the overseas pool. Huang Tsai Feng scored 1,356 to take the lead in the overseas pool and also the overall lead in the Women's singles. Super Classic champion, Jesmine Ho of Singapore also impressed on her first attempt with 1,288. 2nd runner-up in the Asian Bowling Tour Grand Slam Finals, Chou Miao-Lin scored 1,235 on her first attempt and is in 3rd place.
National kegler, Low Poh Lian improved on her earlier score with 1,279 dislodging Sharon Low to 3rd spot.
Asian Games Gold medalist, Sunny Hui of Hong Kong joined teamates K.F. Chiang and Eric Lau to qualified for the Men's Open Masters with a score of 1,339. K.F. Chiang scored an impressive 1,366 and three pins behind him is Eric Lau with 1,363. Earlier, Eric had nine consecutive strikes for chance to take the perfect game of a double-storey link house worth RM354,348. He shot a weak 1-3 pocket and left pin-7 standing. World FIQ champion, Tom Hahl also made the finals with a score of 1,345.

There is no change in the local pool of the Women's Masters table with Sarah Yap taking top spot followed by Low Poh Lian and Sharon Low 2nd and 3rd respectively.
In the overseas pool, Huang Tsai Feng of C. Taipei is still in 1st place. Kuo Shu Chen and Wang Yu-Ling, both of C. Taipei dislodged Jesmine Ho of Singapore into 4th place by qualifying with scores of 1,333 and 1,316 respectively.
World Cup champion, Maxine Nable of Australia, in her second attempt scored 1,265 and is lying 6th in the overseas pool. Suppaporn C. of Thailand improved on her earlier score to finish in2nd spot with 1,343 dislodging Kuo Shu Chen of C. Taipei into 3rd and Wang Yu Lin into 4th. Chou Miao-Lin of C. Taipei is in 5th with 1,235.
The qualifying rounds will end on the 18th March, Thursday. The finals will be played on the 19th March and the top 16 Men and Women will qualify for the round-robin finals on Saturday. The top 14 Asian Men and Women will also qualify for the Malaysia Masters Cup, the 1st leg of the Asian Bowling Tour.
More and more overseas bowlers are making it to the Masters Finals for the Men and Women Open category. Wang Yu Jen and Wu Fu Lung of C. Taipei scored 1,419 and 1,368 respectively to take up the 2nd and 3rd spot in the overseas pool of the qualifying table dislodging Cheng Chao Yu, who was sitting in 2nd spot for 2 days, to 4th. There is not much change in the local pool except ex-national kegler and 19th SEA Games Singles gold medalist, Ricky Chen of Kuala Lumpur improving his score from 1,300 to 1,320 and has secured the last spot in the local pool.
Meanwhile, in the women's overseas pool, regning World Cup champion Maxine Nable of Australia improved her score to 1,311 assuring her a spot in the Masters finals and is lying in 5th place. Kamilla Kjeldsen of Denmark, who only arrived last night scored 1,269 and is in 7th spot. Sarah Yap still leads the local pool in the women's section with Low Poh Lian and Sharon Low in 2nd and 3rd respectively. New recruit to the women national team, Lisa Liew from Sarawak just barely made the finals with a score of 1,212 and is in 8th spot.
The participants still have one more day to try and make the cut for the Masters finals which will end at 11.20pm tomorrow, 18th March.
Ex-national kegler, Allan Chia of Kuala Lumpur hits a perfect game during his warm up before the finals tomorrow. Allan, who won two gold medals in the Singles and Masters Finals of the 12th Interstate championship, improved on his earlier score of 1,387 to 1,394. His 12-stirkes was perfect indeed with every strikes in the 1-3 pocket. He won a double-storey corner terrace house worth RM354,498 kindly sponsored by Lembah Berigin Sdn Bhd, the developer of the property. Lembah Berigin is a subsidiary of Land & General Berhad, the main sponsor of this championship. Ooi Lai Beng is still leading the local pool followed by Allan Chia in 2nd place. New found talent from Sarawak and a new recruit into the national team, Jackson Ting made the finals with a score of 1,336.

In the overseas pool, Cheng Shao-Sheng dropped to 2nd when Hsieh Yu Ping shot 1,470 to take the lead. Chester King of the Philippines scored an impressive 1,428 to dislodge Wang Yu Jen into 4th spot. Tom Hahl from Finland, who is now a Singapore permanent resident and can qualify for the Asian Bowling Tour, improved his earlier score with 1,406 while Singapore's ex-national bowler, Rick Tan also impressed with 1,394 and are lying in 5th and 6th respectively. Purvis Granger of USA, who is here as coach for Hong Kong also qualified with 1,344.
In the Women's local pool, it looks like no other local women will take over the lead from Sarah Yap's 1,326. She is in top form especially after winning the innaugural Asian Bowling Tour Grand Slam Finals in Taipei in January this year. She also won the Women's gold in the National championship late January. Low Poh Lian and Sharon Low is still in 2nd and 3rd respectively.
World Cup champion, Maxine Nable of Australia did well to score 1,311 and is in 5th place. The leader in the overseas pool is still Huang Tsai Feng with 1,356 and Suppaporn C. of Thailand in 2nd with 1,343.
The qualifying rounds will end today. The top 36 Men and top 30 Women qualifiers will play 10 games on the 1st Block of the Masters finals on the 19th March and the top 16 Men and Women will qualify for the round-robin finals on Saturday. At the end of the Masters Finals 2nd Block, the top 14 Asian Men and Women will also qualify for the Malaysia Masters Cup, the 1st leg of the Asian Bowling Tour to be played on the 21st and 22nd March.
DAY 10 HIGHLIGHTS - EVENING16th Commonwealth Games Silver medalist, Richard Hood of England qualified for the Men's Open Masters finals after struggling for 4 days of qualifying. He was finding it difficult to qualify for the past three days and finally found his line to score 1,386. He is in 8th spot after his successfult attempt. Andrew Fang, a member of the Singapore national team also made the cut when he hit 1,400 and is in a comfortable 6th place. He joined his teammate, Sam Goh who also qualified with 1,352 pinfalls. World Cup champion, C.M. Yang has dropped to only lead the overseas/local mixed pool.
One by one, more and more bowlers are qualifying for the Men's Open Masters. Today alone, more than 6 overseas bowlers have qualified. However in the local pool, only the 17-year-old Sarawakian and a new recruit to the national team, Jackson Ting qualified with 1,336.
There is, however, no change in the Women's Open Masters. Sarah Yap is still the leader in the Women's local pool. Low Bee Lian, also a new recruit to the national rank, improved her last position in the local pool with 1,226 and is in 8th spot. 14-year-old Singapore national youth member, Valerie Teo scored 1,362 to lead the overseas pool dislodging Huang Tsai Feng into 2nd spot. Liza Del Rosario of the Philippines, who was lying in 2nd-last place of the overseas/local mixed pool improved her score to 1,354 and is now comfortably in 3rd spot. Jennifer Tan and Catherine Kang of Singapore also made it with 1,294 and 1,239 respectively.
