9th January, P.Jaya: National youth sqaud member, Adrian Ang from Penang took over the lead of the Men's Open Masters qualifying table in the 28th Malaysian National Championship with ex-national and Penang's Lai Chuen Lian occupying second.

Adrian, the 15 year-old Form Four student who won two Gold medals in the Singles and Boy's Doubles event of the just concluded 17th Interstate Championship, set the lanes on fire to score 995 this afternoon. Adrian started his qualifying with modest 226 in the first game then recorded 10 consecutive strikes in the second game and going for the perfect game award of a Canon Digital Camcorder. On his 11th frame shot, everyone at the centre were certain all the 10 pins were going to be knocked over but left a single pin standing.

With a 289 game in the second, Adrian went on to knocked down 248 and 232 for a total of 995 to top the Men's Open Masters qualifying table.

"I feel confident before the start of my qualifying this afternoon especially after winning two Gold medals in the Interstate championship

so I was able to make good shots throughout the 4 game qualifying," said Adrian. "I did not make the Asian Schools team last year in a roll-off but I am determined to make the squad this time round," added the national youth squad member.

Penang bowlers occupied the top 2 positions in the Men's table when ex-national, Lai Chuen Lian scored 931 with lines of 235, 257, 246 and 193. Overnight leader and Santa Claus Open champion, Mohd Nadri was pushed down to 3rd on 915.


In the ladies division, Wendy Chai continued to top the table with 889 with ex-national, Low Poh Lian improving back to 2nd spot with 840 while national squad member, Choy Poh Lai also moving up to 3rd with 825.

Meanwhile, national youth member, Christyn Chew of Selangor shot to the lead of the Girl's Open Masters table with 880, relegating Syarifah Arifah from Perak into 2nd on her 821 scored yesterday while Sabah's Debbie Kong was 3rd with 795. The Boy's Open table also saw Selangor's Kelvin Keong taking over top spot with 866 followed by Sean Hee in 2nd on 861 and Johor's Fahmi Bahri in 3rd on 850.

Qualifying ends this evening at 11.30pm and the Masters Finals will be played tomorrow, 10th January.

8th January, P.Jaya: National bowler and Santa Clus Open champion, Mohd Nadri took over the lead of the Men's Open Masters qualifying table in the 28th Malaysian National Championship while Wendy Chai maintained top in the Ladies' division.

The 18 year-old national squad member took over the lead from national backup squad member, Mohd Noer Said with an impressive score of 915. Asian Bowling Tour Grand Slam finalist, Azidi Ameran also moved into 2nd spot with 912 pushing down Mohd Noer into 3rd place just one pin away on 911.

National squad Zulmazran Zulkifli and backup squad member, Zaid Izlan finished 4th and 5th with 872 and 871 respectively.

The top three positions in the Men's Graded division remained unchange with Melaka's Sufian Othman (888) in top spot, Asrul Azmir (885) in 2nd and Edwin Yeoh (868) in 3rd.

Hong Kong Open and ABT Hong Kong leg champion, Wendy Chai maintained her lead in the Ladies' division with a score of 889. Wendy is hoping to use this national championship as a tune up to the Grand Slam Finals in Singapore next week which is will be participating.

Wendy and her Selangor teamate just won the Women's Team Gold medal in the 17th Interstate Championship which will be concluding this evening.

National backup squad member, Zandra Aziela finished 2nd in the qualifying table with 850 while Sarah Yap, who is already an automatic qualifier for the Masters finals after finishing 4th in the Interstate All Events and elevated to 3rd as Shalin Zulkifli is the defending champion.

Similarly, not much changes occured in the Ladies' Graded division with Tay Li Neo still leading with 807 followed by Interstate two Gold medalist, Yap Pui Yee with 795 while Hong Kong Open Graded Ladies Masters champion, Sharon Koh in 3rd spot with 773.

In the Boy's Open division, Interstate two Gold medalist and national youth squad member, Adrian Ang maintained top place with 891 followed by Johor's Fahmi Bahri in 2nd with 850 and Chang Sean Der of Selangor in 3rd with 829. Qualification for the National Championship will end tomorrow, 9th January, 2004.

Ex-national bowler, Lily Chua emerges as Senior champion

6th January, P.Jaya: Ex-national bowler, Lily Chua from Kuala Lumpur emerged as champion in the Senior Bowling Championship at Pyramid Megalanes this evening. Nazli Muhamad finished second while another ex-national, Dicky Chew came in third.

Lily Chua, the 62 year-old grandmother, scored 1256 over 6 games to emerge as this year's Senior Champion ahead of many younger senior male bowlers. She demonstrated her experience she gained when she was a member of the national team to take home RM2,000 in prize money.

Lily was one a national champion in her prime when she took the title in 1984 at the then Kent Bowl at Asiajaya Shopping Complex. Nazli Muhamad from Kelantan finished a creditable second with 1226 while another former national bowler, Dicky Chew came in 3rd with 1217. Tony Chan (4th-1170), former national bowler, Faridah Taib (5th-1161), Chong Kau Chye (6th-1149) finished amongst the winners.

Pahang, Johor youth wins Peter Yap Memorial Cup

5th January, P.Jaya: 14 year-old Rodson Tong of Pahang, a lefthander from Sekolah Menegah Kebangsaan Tok Sera Kuantan, took the overall Champion Title of the 6th edition of Peter Yap’s Memorial Cup 14 & under this evening at Pyramid Megalanes.

Rodson scored an impressive 592 pinfalls over 3 games for an average of 197. Rodson also bowled the highest game of 257 which impressed sponsor Milo to provide him with a one year supply of Milo. Selangor’s Syahereza Fajrin finished 2nd with 552 followed by Rafiq Azri also from Selangor in 3rd place with 535 while Sarawak’s Nazrin Wagman and KL’s Muhd ahd Hazali tied on 4th position with 521.

Johor’s Wan Nur Atiqqa, 13 year-old Form Two student of SMK Komplek Sultan Abu Bakar, Gelang Patah, took the Girls' division Champion title with 558 averaging 186. Pahang’s Jerusha Chan came close to finish second with 552 followed by Farah Izzazaya, also from Pahang in 3rd spot with 534. Sarawak again missed the podium finishing 4th position through Jacqueline Jenele with 522.

The Peter Yap’s Memorial Cup 14 & under Bowling Competition, inaugurated in 1998 to pay respect to the late Deputy President of MTBC, attracted a record of 75 young bowlers from all over the country. The Competition was held immediately after the traditional Opening Ceremony of the 28th Malaysian National & 17th Interstate Bowling Championships which was officially declared open by EXCO of Selangor Government, Chairman of Standing Committee for Tourism, Science, Technology and Organization Development - YB Dato' Lum Weng Keong.

14 States have entered their teams comprising of Youth Girls, Youth Boys, Women and Men in the 17th Interstate Bowling Championship which will kicked off with the Singles event for Women and Gilrs tomorrow morning at 9.00am, and followed by Singles for Men and Boys in the afternoon.

Wendy Chai storms into the lead of qualifying table

5th January, P.Jaya: Newly crowned Hong Kong Open and Asian Bowling Tour Hong Leg champion, Wendy Chai stormed into the lead of the Ladies' Open Masters qualifying table in the 28th Malaysian National Championship at Pyramid Megalanes this morning.

Wendy, who also won the World Championship Women's Team Gold medal, was on a hot streak scoring 889 and an average of 222.25 to take over the lead from ex-national bowler, Low Poh Lian. Another national bowler, Sarah Yap also did well in her first attempt to take 2nd spot with 884 ahead of early leader, Low Poh Lian into 3rd position on 840.

PBAP-Bevida Classic champion, Tang Joh Six dropped to 4th with 801 followed by ABT Hong Kong leg runner-up, Lai Kin Ngoh in 5th position with 768.

There were no changes in the Men's Open division with national backup squad member, Mohd Noer Said still in front with 911 followed by another national backup squad member, Zaid Izlan in 2nd with 871 while 3rd spot went to ex-national kegler, Mustafa Yassin on 845.

Penang Pesta Ladies' Graded champion, Esther Cheah continued to lead the Girl's Open masters qualifying table with 791 with Kuala Lumpur's Yap Pui Yee taking over 2nd spot with a score of 787 and GP Finals Girls' Graded champion, Siti Safiyah in 3rd with 770.

The participants of the 17th Interstate Championship have all arrived Pyramid Megalanes and are set for march past in the Official Opening Ceremony which will be held this evening at 8.00pm. Yang Bhg. Dato' Lum Weng Keong, EXCO Member of the Selangor State Government is the Guest of Honour who will officially declare the championship open. Immediately following the opening, 77 14 & under youths will take part in the Peter Yap's Memorial Cup event.

Qualification for the National Championship began today and will end 9th January, 2004 while the 17th Interstate Championship will be held from the 5 - 8 January.

Kuala Lumpur bowlers shows promises

3rd January, P.Jaya: Kuala Lumpur Interstate representatives, Tay Li Neo and Yap Pui Yee occupied the top two positions of the Ladies' Graded Masters qualifying table of the 28th Malaysian National Championship at Pyramid Megalanes while the Open division remained unchanged.

Tay, the 21 year-old executive secretary of MTBC and representing Kuala Lumpur in the Ladies' division for the Interstate, topped the Masters qualifying table with a score of 805 ahead of her teammate, Yap Pui Yee who score 795. Pui Yee won the Ladies' Graded Masters in last year's championship.

"We are confident that we will be able to win a medal in the Women's Team event during the Interstate championship as we now have a much stronger team," said Ms Tay. Former national champion and ex-national bowler, Lily Chua, who is a veteran, demonstrated her ability to take 3rd spot in the table with 757. Lily is looking forward to doing well when she competes in the Senior Competition.

Meanwhile, national backup squad member, Mohd Moer Said from Sabah continued to top the Men's Open Masters table with 911.

Newcomer, Mat Salleh Jalani from Selangor shot to 2nd spot with 817 pushing national backup squad member, Zaid Izlan into 3rd spot on 787. Former national kegler, Mustafa Yassin took 4th place with a lowly 720. There was also no change in the Ladies' Open division with ex-national, Low Poh Lian still in front with 840 scored yesterday. PBAP-Bevida Classic champion, Tang Joh Six from Sarawak was 2nd with 793 while World Championship Team Gold medalist, Choy Poh Lai finished 3rd with 734.

Former Interstate Singles Gold medalist, Sufian Othman continued to lead the Men's Graded division with 888, just three pins ahead of ex-national youth bowler, Asrul Azmir in 2nd with 885 and Edwin Yeo of N.Sembilan in 3rd with 868.

Mohd Noer, Low Poh Lian takes early lead

2nd January, P.Jaya: National Backup Squad member, Mohd Noer Said from Sabah and ex-national kegler, Low Poh Lian took an early in the Men's and Ladies' Open Masters qualifying table on Day 1 of the 28th Malaysian National Bowling Championship at Pyramid Megalanes.

Mohd Noer, the 19 year-old student from Kota Kinabalu, scored an impressive 911 and averaging 227.75 to lead the Men's Open Masters qualifying table last night. Mohd Noer who was recruited into the National Backup squad after qualifying top in a roll-off held in July last year, has yet to win any major title and will be hoping to do well in this championship.

In second position was another national backup squad member, Zaid Izlan who knocked down 787. The 15 year-old Zaid will need to better his score if he wants to make the masters finals.

Many of the national bowlers have yet taken to the lanes on Day 1 and the scores will definitely be very high based on past championships.

In the Ladies' division, ex-national kegler Low Poh Lian topped the table with a score of 840. The 26 year-old Sports Science undergraduate on her semester break is participating in this championship after being away from the scene for several years.

Second spot went to national backup squad member and winner of this year's PBAP-Bevida Classic in Manila, Tang Joh Six from Sarawak. Joh Six downed 793 in her 4-game qualifying attempt earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, the Opening 9-Pintap champion, William Koh of Selangor, topped the Boy's Open Masters table with 795 followed by Mervyn Mohd on 792 in 2nd spot and Noradli Norian in 3rd with 782.

Selangor's Youth Girls representative for the Interstate Championship, Hee Kar Foong led the Girl's Open division with a score of 750 ahead of 6th Asian Schools Singles Silver medalist, Sharon Koh who scored 742. Kuala Lumpur's Low Xin Pin shared 2nd place with Sharon on a same score of 742.

Former Interstate Singles Gold medalist, Sufian Othman topped the Men's Graded division with an impressive socre of 888 followed by ex-national youth, Azrul Azmir with 885 in 2nd while Edwin Yeoh took 3rd spot with 868. In the Ladies' Graded division, Tay Li Neo of Kuala Lumpur took the lead with a score of 805 with another KL youth, Yap Pui Yee in 2nd on 795 while ex-national champion and former national bowler, Lily Chua in 3rd with 757.

Qualification for the National Championship began today and will end 9th January, 2004 while the 17th Interstate Championship will be held from the 5 - 8 January.

Selangor youth bags Opening 9-Pintap title

2nd January, P.Jaya: Selangor youth, William Koh bagged the Opening 9-Pintap event on the first day of the 28th Malaysian National & 17th Interstate Bowling Championships at Pyramid Megalanes this evening.

The 19 year-old INTI College IT student scored 778 over the three-games Special Opening 9-Pintap event to bag the top prize of RM1,000. Second was Hamidi Yaacob of Bumiputra-Commerce Bank who scored 768 while another Selangor youth, Kutwin Low finished third with 745 pinfalls.

Fadzli and K.H. Kok finished in the money to take 4th and 5th places respectively with 752 and 752. Participants from 6th to 10th positions took home a Milo hamper.

The 28th Malaysian National & 17th Interstate Bowling Championships 2003 is usually held in the beginning of the year due to a hectic bowling calendar throughout the year. This year’s championship has attracted a total of 14 States competing in the Interstate championship with a

newcomer, Labuan Federal State. The other states competing are Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Penang, Perak, Sabah, Sarawak and Selangor.

The official opening will be held on the 5th January, 2004 at Pyramid Megalanes commencing 7.30pm and will be graced by YBhg. Dato’ Lum Weng Keong, Selangor State Government Executive Councillor who is the Chairman of Standing Committee for Tourism, Science & Technology, and Organization Development.

National keglers, Daniel Lim and Shalin Zulkifli will be defending their title which they won last year. Qualification for the National Championship began today and will end 9th January, 2004 while the 17th Interstate Championship will be held from the 5 - 8 January.
