Top seeds claim titles |
1st April, P.Jaya: Top-seeds, Alex Liew of Malaysia and Diandra Asbaty of USA claimed the Men's and Ladies' Open Masters titles of 29th Malaysian International Open Bowling Championship which concluded at Pyramid Mega Lanes Saturday evening. |
 |
Liew, the Asian-ranked No. 1 and winner of five international titles in 2005, overcomed his less-experienced opponent and compatriot, Zaid Izlan 198-166 in the men's final stepladder match to score his first-ever Malaysian Open title.
"I've been playing in the Malaysian Open for five times. I consider today's victory as the best ever. I didn't expect to win the championship title today. This win will keep me going. I've been working hard on ball equipments to suit different lane conditions," said the 30-year-old champion.
The win was even sweeter for Liew as his wife, Belinda Kang and his 3-year-old daughter, Licia were in the stands to cheer and witness the triumph. It's a good beginning for me this year. I was feeling very |

confident when i took my first strike. I would like to thank my coaches Chris Batson and Hollaway Cheah for helping me with my game."
First runner-up and member of the National Gemilang 2010 squad, Zaid Izlan had earlier blazed the lanes to defeat third-seed, Hussain Al-Suwaidi of UAE and winner of the first match, Lim Fung Jong of Malaysia, 290-207-152 to set up an all-Malaysian final.
In the men's first match, ex-national and fifth-seed had knocked out fourth-seed, Zulmazran Zulkifli and sixth-seed, Sayed Ibrahim of UAE, 210-172-185. Sayed remained in sixth position and Zulmazran dropped one rung to fifth. Hussian ended up third with Lim in fourth place. |
In the ladies' division, third-seed, Choy Poh Lai almost gave Malaysia a double celebration but had to succumb to the 2004 World Ranking Masters champion, Diandra Asbaty of the USA after loosing the ladies' final stepladder match, 172-202.
Both the finalist did not start off well with an open frame each in the second. However, Diandra was able to settle down quicker than the Malaysian as she struggled to find her line on a fresh pair of lanes.
A change of bowling ball towards the final quarter of the match was a bit too late as the champion cruised to a comfortable win. "Malaysia is very kind to me and is my favourite country. My first success here was winning the Masters Gold medal during the 2003 World Championship. Now with this title, I can get a chance to come back again next year," said the Diandra. |

The runner-up had earlier earned a crack at the title after she easily ousted second-seed, Kim Eun-Jung of Korea and winner of the first match, Luckana Panya of Thailand, 244-206-173. Panya took the first match defeating fourth-seed, Zara Glover of England and fifth-seed, Zandra Aziela of Malaysia, 194-180-182.
Alex Liew won for himself the top prize of RM20,000 while Diandra Asbaty took home RM10,000 for her effort. The top 16 men and top 16 ladies made the cut for the ABF Tour Malaysia leg which will be held tomorrow (2nd April) commencing at 1.30pm at Pyramid Mega Lanes.
