Purvis Granger, Jennifer Tan crowned Penang Pesta Open champions |
21st December, S.Prai: First block joint-leader and AVIVA ABT Philippines' Leg champion, Purvis Granger was crowned the 30th Penang Pesta International Open Men's Masters champion while 2002 World Ranking Masters champion, Jennifer Tan of Singapore took the Ladies' crown.

The former PBA bowler from USA, who has taken permenent residence in the Philippines, emerged the champion after scoring 2450 and winning 10 of his 12 round-robin finals today for a total of 4664. A member of the Philippines national squad training staff, Purvis was unlucky to finish second in the 28th Hong Kong Open last month, made amends by capturing the final international event in the Asian circuit. He has also qualified for the AVIVA Asian Bowling Tour Grand Slam and on this form, he will feel confident going into the finals, which will be held in Singapore next month.

Renigning 2002 World Ranking Masters Champion, Singapore's Jennifer Tan, who lead the Women's Open Masters first block finals, yesterday did not disappoint her supporters when she emerged this year Ladies Open champion. She scored 2053 for a total of 4155 over the two block finals ahead of defending champion, Lisa Clutario of the Philippines on 4094. The Singapore lass, who won the 2nd Vietnam Open in October, has added another title to her already outstanding perfomances this year. She has also qualified for the AVIVA ABT Grand Slam Finals in her home ground and will be looking forward to a good showing.
Malaysia's Shalin Zulkifli (4072) did well to finish third ahead of teammate and local favourite, Lai Kin Ngoh (4040) in fourth. Choy Poh Lai (3895), who just squeezed into today's finals also did well to take fifth spot. |

20th December, S.Prai: Former SEA Games Gold medalist, Ricky Chen of Malaysia shared the lead of the Men's Open Masters first block finals with AVIVA ABT Philippines' Leg champion, Purvis Granger in the 30th Penang Pesta International Open while 2002 World Ranking Masters champion, Jennifer Tan of Singapore lead the Ladies' division.

The former national kegler from Kuala Lumpur scored 2114 over the 10 games first block finals to tie with Philippines' Purvis Granger. Purvis, runner-up in the recent Hong Kong Open, was leading all the way till the 9th game, when he downed 190 in the 10th game allowing Ricky to catch up for the tie. Khor Wei Tak of Penang came in 3rd with 2103 followed by National bowler Azren Mohd Noor in 4th placing with 2036.
Singapore's Andy Lai did well to finish fifth with 1997 followed by Penang's Chong Ka Bu just one pin further away in sixth. Based on the results, the lane condition looks tough but for Purvis, a former pro-bowler and very knowledgable in reading lane condition, adapted well along with the spinners doing better than the conventional hook-ball bowlers. |

2002 World Ranking Masters Champion, Singapore's Jennifer Tan lead the Women's Open Masters first block finals with 2080 pinfalls to average 208. Busan Asian Games Masters Gold medalist, Shalin Zulkifli is 85 pins behind in second place with 1995 while defending champion, Philippines' Lisa Clutario is another 24 pins away in 3rd place with 1971.
Malaysia's Lai Kin Ngoh was a close 4th with 1957, 14 pins behind Lisa while Busan Asian games Doubles Gold medalist, Wendy Chai tied with 2000 national champion Tang Joh Six in 5th place with 1885. Indonesia's Angelina Karto (1860) and Sharon Limansantaso (1849) both made the finals in 7th and 8th while 9th place went to Ladies' Graded Champion, Rohaya Abd Rahim (1846). The final spot went to Malaysia's Choy Poh Lai (1799). |

Meanwhile, the Men's Graded B title went to Penang's Khoo Hean Seah who scored 2432 with Abdul Jalil Hassan in second with 2385 while Muhd Jasman Yahya took third place with 2381. Penang's Rohaya Abd Rahim emerged the Ladies Graded champion when she scored 2368 ahead of second place Christyn Chew from Selangor on 2261. Youth Girl's Open champion, Voon Kim Ling settled for third with 2209.
Men's B champion, Khoo Hean Seah nearly scored a double from the Men's Graded A division, but Singapore's Johnny Liang proved too good for the Khoo to capture the title with a score of 2584. Khoo settled for second with 2435 while another local, Frank Khor finished third with 2409.
Top 12 Men's Open and top 10 Women's Open qualified for tomorrow's finals and will bowl a round-robin format with 10 pins bonus for a win and 5 for a tie. The final position round match will determine the champion. |

19th December, Seberang Prai: Malaysia's Sarah Yap moved to the top of the Ladies' Open Masters qualifying table of the 30th Penang Pesta International Open at Megalanes, Seberang Prai while Azidi Ameran maintained first position in the Men's.

The Busan Asian Games Gold medalist scored 828 over her 4-games qualifying squad just pipping her teammate and Busan Asian Games Masters Gold medalist, Shalin Zulkfili by 2 pins for the lead.
Up and coming national kegler, Choy Poh Lai also staked her claim on the ladies' title by qualifying in third on 823 while early leader Wendy Chai dropped to fourth with 816.
Sixth to eighth places were all occupied by the Malaysian national team with Lai Kin Ngoh (809), Tang Joh Six (804) and Christine Ong (788). Indonesia's Sharon Limansantoso (777) took 9th spot while renigning World Ranking Masters champion, Jennifer Tan from Singapore in 10th. |

In the Men's division, the top three places reamined unchanged with 2000 Penang Pesta champion, Azidi Ameran in the lead with 930 followed by Mustafa Yassin in second with 891 while local spinner, Azizan Hanif in third with 877.
Taipei's Cheng Chao-Sheng, who was 2nd runner-up in the 3rd Milo International Junior All Stars last week in Kuala Lumpur, moved up to fourth with 866 while Malaysia's Jonathan Lim also improved to fifth with 856. Ex-international and a SEA Games Gold medalist, Ricky Chen took 6th spot with 852 followed by Boy's Open Masters champion this morning, Yang Nien-Hua in 7th on a score of 849. Indonesia's Ryan Lalisang (844), AVIVA ABT Philippines leg champion, Purvis Granger (835) and Singapore's Andy Lai (832) finished 8th to 10th respectively. |

19th December, Seberang Prai: Penang's Voon Kim Leng survived a strong challenge from Indonesia to bag the Youth Girl's Open Masters title of the 30th Penang Pesta International Open at Megalanes, Seberang Prai while Chinese Taipei's Yang Nien-Hua took his second Boy's title in Malaysia.

The SUKMA Games Gold medalist, Kim Ling added another feather on her cap as she captured the MILO Girl's Open Masters title this morning. Despite leading from start to finish, Kim Ling had to starve off a strong challenge from Manila based Sharon Limansantoso of Indonesia and emerged victor with a slim 7 pins margin. Kim Ling started well with a 175, 206, 202, 206, 172, 187, 168, 201, 163 and 132 for a 1812 total.
Representing Pyramid Mega Lanes, Esther Cheah from Selangor registered a scoreline of 1784 to finish 3rd, followed by Indonesia's Putty Armein in 4th with 1728, 5th placing went to Hee Kar Foong of Selangor on 1692. Kim Ling took home RM1,000, Sharon RM500 while Esther Cheah settled for RM300. All top three also received hampers sponsored by Nestle Products (Milo). |

In the Boys' Open division, Yang Nien-Hua of Chinese Taipei continued his supremacy with a scintillating spinning display to win his second title in Malaysia within a week. Crowned champion of 3rd MILO International Junior All Stars Championship at Pyramid Megalanes last Sunday, Nien-Hua entertained the local crowd with his polished and consistent delivery. The 19-year-old banged off with a high 226, 182, 212, 213, 210, 226, 200, 223, 236, and 195 for a 2123 total.
Finishing a distant second was local spinning ace, Ooi Hock Keong of Mega Lanes Penang with 1993, followed by another spinner, William Koh from Selangor on 1990 total. SUKMA Games Masters Champion, Aaron Kong finished a creditable 4th position with 1954 while Azren Mohd Noor completed the top 5 in 5th with 1940. |

In the Girls' Graded Finals, Christyn Chew of Pyramid Megalanes emerged the champion with a 1862 total with Debbie Kong from Sarawak in 2nd place with 1817 while Irene Lee of Penang came in 3rd with 1792. Charlotte Sak of Selangor took 4th spot with 1658 and 13 year-old, Fatin Syaliana of Penang finished 5th on 1628.
The Boys' Graded title was won by lanky Choe Wai Keong of Penang with a 1896 total. 15 year-old, Kwok T'ng Chang of Penang Free School came in 2nd with 1852 total while Alvin Wong of Chung Ling High School finished 3rd with 1814. Lim Boon Khai of Kedah ended up in 4th place with 1811 and Kelvin Tan of Penang finished 5th with 1778.
Qualifying for the Open and Graded division continues until midnight tonight for a chance to make the cut for the Masters Final. The Senior Masters finals will roll-off later this evening.

18th December, Seberang Prai: Malaysia's Azidi Ameran and Wendy Chai sounded their intention of taking the title when they topped the Men's and Ladies' Open Masters qualifying table of the 30th Penang Pesta International Open at Megalanes, Seberang Prai as competitors.

Malaysia's Azidi Ameran, champion of Penang Pesta 2000, sounded his intention to recapture the Men's title when he scorched the lanes with an impressive 223, 238, 234 and 235 for a 930 total to lead the Men's Open division. SEA Games Gold medalist, Mustafa Yassin was seen enjoying his game antics, scoring 891 total to give Azidi Ameran a run for the money.
Seasoned campaigner and spinner, Azizan Haniff donning the colors of Sin Hup Huat, Penang was also making a strong claim for the title as he registered 877 total to position himself in 3rd placing. Recently crowned 3rd Milo International Junior All Stars champion, Yang Nien-Hua of Chinese Taipei was also making his presence felt with a well placed 5th position. Defending Champion, Gerald Samuel would take on the lanes this evening. |

In the Ladies' Open division, Wendy Chai, Silver medalist of Hong Kong Open 2002 surged to leapfrog over Shalin Zulkifli with a 873 total, followed by Asian Games Masters Silver medalist, Lai Kin Ngoh on 809. Reigning World Ranking Masters Champion, Jennifer Tan of Singapore who arrived this morning, would pose a strong challenge to the defending champion, Lisa Clutario of Philippines. Fresh from her victory at the 2nd Vietnam Open 2002 last month, Jennifer would be in action in the late afternoon squad.
Meanwhile in the Boys Open, local youth Ooi Hock Keong topped the table with 815 followed by Poh Yee Min in second with 814 while Aaron Kong took third spot with 796. Penang youth also topped the Girl's Open qualifying table when Denise Hee score 798 ahead of SUKMA Games Gold medalist, Voon Kim Leng in second on 785 followed closely by Selangor's Esther Cheah in third with 779. |

An interesting and exciting Finals of the MILO Youth divisions is on the cards as the Malaysian Youth would be matching their skills against each other and other overseas participants. The Finals are scheduled to roll off at 09:30am tomorrow morning.

16th December, Seberang Prai: Defending champions Lisa Clutario of Philippines, a Bronze medallist in the recent Busan Asian Games and Malaysia's Gerald Samuel are expecting a strong field of challengers for the title of the on-going 30th Penang Pesta International Open at Megalanes, Seberang Prai.

A Press Conference was held this afternoon at the President's office at Komtar, Penang where Orient Jewellery, the sponsor of the Perfect Game Award handed over the sets of diamonds jewellery worth RM50,000.00 by Mr Fong Kin Meng, Retail Business Manager of Orient Jewellery to YB Dato' Khalid Bin Ramli, President of Penang Tenpin Bowling Association. Also present were Mr Leong Hoy Tong (left) and Ms Jane Eng (second from left), both Directors of Orient Jewellery.
To-date, reigning World Ranking Masters' Ladies' Champion, Jennifer Tan of Singapore has confirmed her entry. Jennifer added another title this year by winning the 2nd Vietnam Open 2002 in Ho Chi Minh City in November 2002. Donning the colors of Philippines, American Purvis Granger is tagged as one of the fore runners to bag the Men's Open title. Purvis gave a good account of himself by winning the Silver medal in both the 2nd Vietnam Open 2002 and AVIVA Asian Bowling Tour, Hong Kong leg respectively. |

Another title contender, Cheng Chao-Sheng of Chinese Taipei has also joined in the fray. The spinner, winner of 1999 AVIVA ABT Malaysian leg, added another cap by winning the Singles Gold in the Far East Championship in Shenzen, China. Team Indonesia is lead by SEA Games' bowler, Ryan Lalisang while Eric Lau, Bronze medalist at the recent Asian Intercity will spearhead the team from Hong Kong.
Our very own Malaysian National team, lead by Asian Games' Women Masters Gold medalist, Shalin Zulkifli would also provide the extra excitement in the competition venue. All the six Malaysian Ladies, namely Shalin, Lai Kin Ngoh, Sarah Yap, Wendy Chai, Sharon Chai and Choy Poh Lai, and four men in Zulmazran Zulkifli, Alex Liew, Daniel Lim and Gerald Samuel, who have qualified for the AVIVA ABT Grand Slam Finals in Singapore, January 2003, would find the 30th Penang Pesta as their final phase of competition for this season.
