Sharon Chai, Yang Nien-Hua captures Junior All Stars titles


15th December, P.Jaya: Malaysia's Sharon Chai and Taipei's Yang Nien-Hua captured the Girl's and Boy's Open Masters titles of the 3rd Milo International Junior All Stars at Pyramid Megalanes while Choi Bok Eum and Christyn Chew took the Graded's title.

In an all-Malaysian Girl's step-ladder finals, Sharon Chai forced top-seed Choy Poh Lai into the sudden-death final game winning the first game 268-183 and then went on to take the second game 219-215 for the title. In the first step-ladder match between Malaysia's Vivien Khoo (2nd-seed - 2471), Sharon (3rd-seed - 2397) and Penang's Rohaya Abd. Rahim (4th-seed - 2359), Sharon won the match 190 to Vivien's 183 and Rohaya's 158 for the next match against Choy. Vivien settled for third with Rohaya in fourth.

2000 All Stars champion, Christine Ong took fifth place with 2351 while Korea's Nam Bo Ra (2356) finished sixth ahead of another Malaysian, Yazlin Razlan (2323) and Indonesia's Putty Armein tie in seventh. Busan Asian Games Tripple Gold medalist, Kim Hyo Mi (2312) was placed eighth.

In the Boy's division, defending champion, Wu Siu Hong nearly took the title for three consecutive years but came up against the in-form, Yang Nien-Hua from Chinese Taipei. The top-seed Yang got the better of Wu when he defeated the challenger 243-203 for his first international title.

In the first match between 2nd-seed Wu (2531), 3rd-seed Cheng Chao-Sheng (2510) and 4th-seed Choi Bok-Eum (2507), Wu and Cheng tied on 220 each and went on to play the 9th and 10th-frame roll-off while Choi scored 202. Wu came off winning the match with 40 while Cheng scored 37 pins.

Cheng took third place while Choi settled for fourth. World Youth Gold medalist, Yannaphon Larpapharat (2485) from Thailand finished fifth ahead of two Malaysians, Aaron Kong (2469) and Jonathan Lim (2457) in sixth and seventh respectively.

Meanwhile, in the Graded divisions, Korea's Choi Bok-Eum got a consolation by winning the Boy's division with a score of 2116 ahead of Malaysia's Zaid Izlan on 2013 followed by Adam Swee of Selangor in third with 1994. Selangor's Christyn Chew emerged the Girls' Greaded champion when she scored 1888 to beat Charlotte Sak by just two pins who settled for second. Third was Singapore's Ong She-Na who scored 1836.

14th December, P.Jaya: 14-year-old Wong Yi Quan from Singapore set the lanes at Pyramid Megalanes on fire to score an outstanding total of 1330 averaging 221.6 to win the Boy's Under-15 Masters title of the 3rd Milo International Junior All-Stars. Wong had lines of 246,247,205,246,207 and 179 while Siti Sofiyah took the Girl's Under-15 title.

Wong had lines of 246, 247, 205, 246, 207 and 179. Second was Korea's 14-year-old Choi Bok Eum who scored 1253 while third place went to Johor's Fahmi Bahri with 1195. Wong, who has been bowling since he was 10 made his parents extremely happy. Both his father and mother was giving him support from the start of the finals this morning.

Meanwhile, Matthew Ssofia (AUS - 909), Shannon Kinnimont (AUS - 906) qualified in 7th and 8th while Singapore youth, Jack Toh (892) and Alvin Kwang (891) also made the cut safely in 16th and 17th.

Taipei's Nien Hua Yang (889 - 18th), Singapore's Chew Faizal (884 - 19th) and Soo Ee Swee (881 - 20th) and Tahiland's Yannaphon L, (881 - 23rd) were the few who made the finals at 9.00pm squad.

In the Girl's Under-15 division, Selangor's Siti Sofiah emerged the champion scoring 1134 ahead of second placed Fatin Syazliana from Penang with 1058 followed by Indonesia's Shalima in third with 1013.

The Under-15 finals had 16 boys and 16 girls competing over 6 games in the first of the Masters finals held today. Qualifying continues for the other divisions and will end tonight at 11.00pm.

In the Girl's Open division, Busan Asian Games Triple Gold medalist, Kim Hyo-Mi signalled her intention to do well in this championship, qualified with 868 to take third while Selangor's Lim Jiachyi also stake her claim scoring 860 for fourth place pushing the field down by two places.

Malaysia's Vivien Khoo (856), Yazlina Razlan (855) and Tang Jh Six (853) occupied fifth to seventh respectively. The Masters final will roll off tomorrow morning with the Boy's and Girl's Graded division before the Open division take to the lanes in the afternoon.

13th December, P.Jaya: Ryan Lalisang, the 22 year-old Law student from Jakarta moved to the top of the Boy's Open Masters qualifying leaderboard of the 3rd Milo International Junior All Stars at Pyramid Megalanes while Korea's Nam Bo Ra impressed to take second spot in the Girl's division.

Ryan Lalisang, who was in 23rd position yesterday, moved up to the top of the Boy's Open Masters qualifying leaderboard when he took to the lanes this morning. Ryan fired lines of 277, 233, 223 and 201 to total 933, 15 pins ahead of overnight leader, Choi Bok-Eum from Korea.

"I was struggling in the first few days but this morning I found a very good line to bowl," said the Indonesian national champion whose best showing this year was finishing second in the Mahatrako Cup in January.

"Now I'm confident that I'll make the step-ladder finals on Sunday," added Ryan. He also won a Bronze medal in the Trios event at the 17th Asian Championship in Hong Kong in July and finished 9th in the 2001 AMF Bowling World Cup at Pattaya.

The 15-year-old Choi Bok-Eum now lies second with 918 with Selangor's Sean Hee in third on 913. Chinese Taipei's up and coming bowler Wu Hao-Ming shot 912 late last night to ensure Chinese Taipei's representation in the Boys Open Finals. Wu, a spinner from Taipei fired in the same pair of lanes with Busan Asian games Gold Medalist, Singaporean Lee Yu Wen while Lee was struggling to find his lines. National Youth Bowler and SUKMA Masters Gold Medalist Aaron Kong, who came in from Penang last night, was in fine form to register 870.

World Youth Masters Gold medalist and Asian Championship Bronze medalist, Yannaphon Larpapharat of Thailand had his first attempt this morning and shot 850 to take 25th spot. Asian Championship Gold medalist and Busan Asian Games Silver medalist, Kim Kyung-Min of Korea also had his first attempt this morning and registered 849 to tie with Singapore's Asian Games Gold medalist Lee Yu Wen in 27th placing. Both of them are required to improve their scores to qualify for the finals.


In the Girl's division, 2001 Akita World Games 1st runner-up and Busan Asian Games Gold Medalist, Nam Bo Ra from Korea sent out a warning that she was determined to win the Junior All Stars title when she registered an impressive 870 total. Nam Bo Ra had lines of 239, 197, 202 and 232 to average 217.50 and safely placed in 2nd position just behind leader Sharon Chai by 7 pins. National Youth Bowler Rohaya Abd Rahim from Penang also secured a berth in the final with 842 shot this morning to take 5th after Sharon, Nam Bo Ra, Vivien Khoo (856) and Yazlin Razlan (855).

In the under 15 category, local Chang Sean Der from Kuala Lumpur, fired 859 to take over the lead from Korea's Choi Bok-Eum in the Boys division. Chang, a 14 year-old product of the National Sports Council's Cheras School Program, had lines of 205, 268, 161 & 225 to average 214.9.

Competition in both the Boy's and Girls Open divisions became very tense and excited after all international stars arrived. The last squad for qualifying ends at 11.00pm tomorrow and the Finals for Open divisions will roll off on Sunday afternoon. Top 32 Boys and top 16 Girls will play 12 games in the Finals and top 6 will then move into Step-Ladder Grand Final.

12th December, P.Jaya: 15 year-old left-hander from Seoul and a member of the Korean Youth camp, Choi Bok Eum became the new leader of the Boy's Open Masters final qualifying table of the 3rd Milo International Junior All Stars at Pyrmaid Megalanes when he scored 918 this afternoon.

The bespectacled left-handed heavy hook-ball bowler had lines of 185, 258, 237 and 238 to top the list of qualifiers and 2 pins more than the overnight leader Sean Hee of Selangor. Choi started bowling three years ago and is a member of the Korean Youth Bowling Camp under Coach Jeong-Bo Kim. Third spot went to Sarawak's Karry Chang with 903 while national bowler Mustafa Yassin, who will be bowling in his last tournament as a youth took fourth place with 899 followed by Mohd Nadri on 897 in fifth.

The other Korean, Back Seung Joon who arrived last night, also did well to score 893 and had already secured with a berth in the finals with his current 7th placing. Australian Trent Cage shot 875 for 11th position and should make the top 32 cut.

SUKMA All-Events Gold medalist and a member of the national squad, Vivien Khoo improved her score to 856 to move up to second spot, 21 pins behind Sharon Chai and is just 1 pin ahead of Yazlin Razlan who slipped to 3rd position. Indonesian Putty Armein shot 832 to secure 6th placing while Sharon Limansantoso shot 815 for 10th placing. National bowler Choy Poh Lai started bowling last night and scored 818 to tie with SUKMA Masters Gold Medalist Zandra Aziela in 8th position.

More international stars are expected to arrive today. Already checked-in this afternoon was 1999 Asian Bowling Tour's Malaysia Leg Champion, Cheng Chao-Sheng of Chinese Taipei. Cheng, the younger brother of Cheng Chao-Yu who represented Chinese Taipei at the Riga AMF World Cup, will give his last shot in the Junior All Stars as he will not be eligible next year.

Born in 1980, Cheng has been actively competing in international tournaments representing Chinese Taipei 3 years ago. Asian Games Gold medallist Nam Bo-Ra and Kim Hyo-Mi have also arrived this evening together with Asian Games Silver Medalist Kim Kyung-Min, who shot a perfect game and won a vintage car during the Malaysian Open last March. Defending Champion and 2001 Asia No. 1, Wu Siu Hong of Hong Kong will only arrive tomorrow to defend his title. The qualifying will end Saturday night at the 11.00pm squad. The Masters final will roll off on Sunday afternoon followed by Step-Ladder Grand Final.

11th December, P.Jaya: SUKMA Games 2002 Trios and All-Events Gold Medalist, Mohd Nadri Mohd Noor bowled consistently to book himself a berth late last night with a total of 897 and in 4th position of the Boy's Open division of the 3rd Milo International Junior All Stars at Pyrmaid Megalanes while Sharon Chai still topped the Girl's table.

The 17-year-old Nadri who was the 2001 SportExcel-NSC-Milo National Junior Circuit GP Finals Champion, knocked down lines of 216, 266, 205 and 210 to average 224.25. "I have just resumed training for about two weeks after my SPM Exam. I need to put in a few more squads to practice before the Finals on Saturday," said the former Form V student of Sekolah Mengarah Sri-Pertama at Kelana Jaya.

"I am thinking of taking a rest from my studies and concentrate in bowling for the next two years to see how far I can achieve in Tenpin Bowling," added Nadri who also won a Silver in SUKMA Team Event, a Silver and Bronze in Stars of Tomorrow in Bangkok last year. "My parents are very supportive of my decision, and I hope to make it to the National Squad in the near future and to win honour for Malaysia."

Sean Hee of Selangor still topped the Boy's Open division with 916 total followed by Sarawak's national youth bowler Karry Chang in second with 903. His scores of 903 was just 13 pins from the leader. Singapore made their presence felt when two of their bowlers made the top 10 after their arrival last night. Chiam Yew Koon shot 881 to be placed 7th position and Lenny Lim knocked down 867 to occupy 9th placing. Two Australians, Matthew Sofia and Robert O'Reilly took 10th and 11th with 866 and 853 respectively.

Not much changes in the Girl's Open division with Sharon Chai still leading the field with 877 shot yesterday. Yazlin Razlan, the early leader remained second on 855 while 2000 National champion, Tang Joh Six followed next in third with 841. Esther Cheah (837) and Christine Ong (824) remained fourth and fifth respectively.

10th December, P.Jaya: 5th Asian Schools Gold medalist Sharon Chai of Malaysia, took over the lead of the Girl's Open Masters qualifying table of the 3rd Milo International Junior All Stars at Pyramid Megalanes in Petaling Jaya while Sean Hee maintained the Boy's top position.

The 19-year-old national bowler, who missed out on the AVIVA ABT Hong Kong leg title despite making the semi-finals, was awesome this afternoon scoring 877 to move to the top of the Girl's Open Masters final leaderboard from Yazlin Razlan who dropped to second on 855 while 2000 National champion, Tang Joh Six also improved to move up to third with 841.

Selangor's Esther Cheah, who was the Graded champion last year scored 837 for fourth followed by 2000 Junior All Stars Girl's Open champion, Christine Ong in fifth with 824. 9th SUKMA Gold medalist, Zandra Aziela (818) moved up to 6th with Lim Jiachyi (808) in seventh.

Meanwhile, in the Girl's Graded division, Phang Chiew Ling from Penang continued to occupy top spot with 802 followed by Siti Sofiyah and Christyn Chew in joint-second with 770.

His scores of 903 was just 13 pins from the leader. Karry also took the High Game award of the day on two consecutvie days with scores of 277 and 278. National kegler, Mustafa Yassin took third spot with 899 followed by Mohd Nadri in fourth with 897.

Another national bowler, Jonathan Lim from Sarawak finished 5th in the table with 894 while former national youth, Ang Kean Joo from Kuala Lumpur took up 6th place with 887. Korea's Choi Bok-Eum, in his first attempt, scored 802 for a lowly 22nd while Busan Asian Games Gold medalist, Lee Yu-Wen from Singapore, in his first squad scored only 769 for 29th place.

8th December, P.Jaya: National kegler, Yazlin Razlan of Malaysia and newcomer, Sean Hee of Selangor topped the Girl's and Boy's Open Masters qualifying table of the 3rd Milo International Junior All Stars at Pyramid Megalanes in Petaling Jaya.

Young national bowlers dominated the Girl's Open division with Yazlin Razlan occupying top spot with 855 bowled in her first attempt. Yazlin, who returned this afternoon from Ipoh where she celebrated Hari Raya with her family, had lines of 223, 223, 201 and 208. Another national bowler Tang Joh Six improved her score to 841 to take second place while Christine Ong is just one rung below in 3rd placing with 797.

Selangor's Sharon Koh (786), Esther Cheah (773) and Hee Kah Foong (757) took up fourth to sixth respectively.

Meanwhile, in the Girl's Graded division, Phang Chiew Ling from Penang occupied top spot with 802 followed by Charlotte Sak in second with 756 and Christyn Chew in third with 745.

Sean Hee of Selangor topped the Boy's Open division with an impressive 916 total going into its 3rd day at Pyramid Megalanes. Sean, a 19 year-old student at Inti Colleage in Subang, shot the leading score in his qualifying attempt yesterday and it remained top till this evening. The right hand spinner who took up bowling at the age of 16 went through AA and AAA of the National Youth Development Program and was a member of the SUKMA Training Squad of Selangor beginning of the year.

Sarawak's national youth bowler Karry Chang shot 903 to earn himself second place in the qualifying table. His scores of 903 was just 13 pins from the leader. Karry, who won the high game of the day award yesterday with a 277, is likely to win the award again today after he shot a 278 with his amazing consistency.

Bowlers who win the High Game of the Day award will get a brand new bowling ball sponsored by Storm. National bowler Mustafa Yassin snatched 3rd spot with 899 while Jonathan Lim shot 894 to occupy 4th placing with Eric Ang in 5th with 879.
