National champion wins Masters gold

23rd February, J.Bahru: Newly-crowned Malaysian National Champion, Fahmi Bahri B Sulaiman of Sekolah Sukan Bandar Penawar ended the Teluk Danga International Games 2008 with victory in the Boy's Masters while Hee Kar Yen of Wilyah Persekutuan captured the Girl's Masters gold.

National youth, Fahmi Bahri, who won the Malaysian National youth and senior crown last month, stepped up on his fine form to bag the the only gold medal for Sekolah Sukan Bandar Penawar when he amassed a total of 3410 over the grueling 16-games Masters finals.

Fahmi also won a silver medal in the Doubles when he partnered Afiq Rifqi B Lahat Daduk on the second day of the championship. Doubles gold medalist, Chan Wei Siang of Johor settled for the silver medal with 3376 ahead of Ozzer Othman of Sabah settling for the bronze medal with 3339.

Triple gold medalist, Syed Muzaffar B Syed Mohsin of Pahang missed the podium to tie in fourth position with Singles bronze medalist, Tengku Afnan B Tg. Zahri of Kedah in fourth spot with 3304.

Doubles gold medalist, Hee Kar Yen added another gold for herself and Wilayah Persekutuan when she triumphed in the Girl's Masters finals with a total of 3299. Team gold medalist, Siti Nur Harini of Selangor settled for the silver with 3186.

Team bronze medalist, Tunku Haifaa Bt Tunku Osman of Pahang took home the bronze medal with a total of 3165, just 33 pins adrift while Team gold medalist, Nadya Izzati missed the podium with a fourth place finish.

Host Johor emerged the overall champion with 3 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze medals. Mohd Haziq B Sahli gave Johor their first gold in the Boy's Singles with Chan Wei Siang and Mohd Faris Mokhtazan winning the second gold in the Boy's Doubles.

National bowler, Wan Nur Atiqqa captured Johor's third in the Girl's All Events. Pahang finished second overall with 3 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals. Rodson Tong, Johnathan Chan and Syed Muzaffar won Pahang's first gold in the Boy's Trios.

The trio partnered Muhammad Saman B Mohd Shuib to bag their second in the Boy's Team event and Syed Muzaffar won the third gold in the Boy's All Events. Wilayah Persekutuan finshed third overall with 2 gold and 2 silver medals.

Johor also emerged as overall games champion with a haul of 39 gold medals. The 155-strong East Kalimantan contingent took second with 36 gold while SUKMA host, Terengganu came third with 23 golds.

More than 80 contingents from ten countries - Germany, Hong Kong, the Czech Republic, Japan, Macau, Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia - competed in 28 sports. The hosts finished champions in boxing, fencing, golf, lawn bowls, silat, bowling, volleyball and canoeing with East Kalimantan reigning supreme in weighlifting, tennis, football and taekwando.

With its resounding success, the Majlis Sukan Negeri Johor (MSNJ) is already setting its sights on the Malaysia Games in May.
