Clean Sweep by the Swedes

13th September, Kuala Lumpur
: A new Championship record six-game series score of 1,487 by Martin Larsen of Sweden and a doubles score of 2,711 with partner Robert Andersson, saw the blue and gold Swedish flag up on high at the conclusion of today's B squad, the second of the four scheduled at the Pyramid Megalanes today.

Larsen 24, from Gothenburg, the recent Super Series Olympia Tournament champion in Helsingborg, Sweden, enjoyed an outstanding set of 245, 248, 265, 258, 237 and 234, a 247.83 average, to set the new record. Andersson, 21, also from Gothenburg, backed him up with a 1,224 series. "I stole all the strikes from Robert," joked Larsen. "I had a bad start in the singles on Thursday and a great start today. It was the other way around for Robert. We're a little disappointed that our pinfall total fell just five pins short of the Championship record."

Men's Squad B leader, Anderssen and Larsen

They started their sixth game just three pins shy of the Malaysian team of Daniel Lim and Azidi Ameran, so there was massive support for the home team from the tightly packed concourse. "We really had to stay focused," said Andersson. "The Malaysians in the audience were screaming their heads off so we could not be on the approach at the same time as they were bowling. They had some open frames and that let us through to take the lead."

Mexico's duo of Benjamin Corona and Alejandro Cruz have been demoted to third place now, but there are still two squads to go. However, the pattern of the Championships so far is that the high scores have come from the first or second squads in all of the events, men or women, so the winning score could already be set at the top of the leader board. It could be the Swedish teams 20th gold medal in World Championship history.
