England On The Treasure Hunt

14th September, Kuala Lumpur
: Records tumbled once again at the Pyramid Megalanes as England's dynamic duo of Zara Glover and Kirsten Penny hit an outstanding series of 2,737 to whisk themselves into gold medal contention with just one more squad to bowl.

In front of what certainly must have been a record crowd, both in attendance and enthusiasm, Glover, 21, who won gold in singles on Friday, contributed 1,336 but it was Penny, 26, who pounded the pocket more to total 1,401.

But the English did not have things all their own way. Just a couple of pairs of lanes distant, TeamUSA's Diandra Hyman and Lucy Sandelin were holding the limelight as just a few pins separated them from the Brits. Whilst Hyman strung the strikes, Sandelin suffered a low count. Ten strikes in a row saw Hyman through with a 289 but Sandelin struggled to a 166.

Hyman set a new tournament ladies' six-game record, averaging 249.33 for 1,496, beating the previous record by 89 pins. This score also tops that 1,487 from Martin Larsen of Sweden in the men's division, set yesterday. The American pair currently hold second place and in the bronze medal slot are Venezuela's Patricia Ciotti and Alicia Marcano.

Glover, now living in Bournemouth, and Penny, a resident of Stevenage, were paired after their performance in singles earlier in the week. Their total pinfall over the two events has Glover sitting at the top of the leader board on 2,722, Hyman 2.663 and Penny 2,609.

Asked how her mother is coping with the glory, watching every ball from the stands, Glover said, "I might find out when she stops crying."

When the thoughts turned to the upcoming trios and team events, Penny said, "Medals are a goal and a possibility. We won't be making up the numbers. If someone beats our score, well done to them. We'll still be on the podium."

So far, the pattern of the tournament has been for the best scores to come from the earlier squads. If that continues, the medals could already be settled.
