Ups and Downs

18th September, Kuala Lumpur
: This morning's squad in the Men's Teams event at Pyramid Megalanes caused some unexpected upsets. Even Squad winners - USA were disappointed, while overnight hopefuls Australia and Malaysia slid out of contention in the face of a solid outing by the UAE and England teams.

England stormed from ninth place to finish third, with a 3187 series, including a perfect game by 27 year-old Nottingham bowler, Darren Cundy in Game 4.

USA anchorman, Tim Mack was downcast. "Obviously we didn't put ourselves in a good position today" he said. "Yes, we're in the lead but especially with the talent that's out there on the lanes…we'll have to wait and see. "It's frustrating - you think you execute a good shot, but…that's what the game does - it humbles you…and keeps you hungry" he added wryly.

Representation at World level has a special significance for Mack. "You just can't put a price tag on it - I don't know how to explain the emotion that runs through you - and I'm sure it's the same for the other guys…it's a special feeling to be out there" he said.

Strong performances from Mohd Al Qubaisi, Shaker Ali and Sultan Abdulla consolidated the UAE's position in second place. Today's 3168 series puts them within 22 pins of the lead, with England just 54 pins behind. They, like the US bowlers, are now awaiting the outcome of tonight's Squad A matches to determine their medal fate.

Bill Hoffman was philosophic about missing the Championship's fourth perfect game with a 278 in Game 5. "The best bowlers are not concerned with 300's - it's not the first time it's happened and won't be the last" he said smiling broadly.

The pairing of USA and Iraq in the first game of this morning's squad intrigued many onlookers. "Hats off to them for coming…they don't even have a bowling centre. "It tells you something about how great our sport is…bringing two countries together - what goes on the lanes has nothing to do with politics" said Mack.
